O Prémio Nobel da Paz foi entregue ontem a três mulheres: Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, presidente da Libéria, Leymah Gbowee, líder de um movimento pacífico feminino também na Libéria e Tawakel Karman, jornalista, política e activista de direitos humanos do Iémen, pela sua luta pacífica pela segurança, direitos e igualdade das mulheres e pelo esforço para alcançar a paz.
No discurso de entrega do prémio (completo aqui) de Thorbjørn Jagland, saliento esta bonita passagem: "You give concrete meaning to the Chinese proverb which says that "women hold up half the sky". That was why, when giving its reasons for this year's award, the Nobel Committee stated that "We cannot achieve democracy and lasting peace in the world unless women acquire the same opportunities as men to influence developments at all levels of society".
